Kylemore Abbey, situated in Co. Mayo overlooking Lough Polacoppul, is a Gothic-style baronial mansion built by Mitchell Henry, a wealthy Liverpool merchant, as a dream home for his young bride, Margaret. In 1920, the castle was purchased by the Irish Dames of Ypres, Belgium, who sought refuge during WWI after abandoning their convent in Ypres. Today, Kylemore Abbey is one of the leading tourist attractions in Ireland, with its restored walled gardens Gothic Church and visitor center.
